Geometric and morphologic evolution of normal fault planes and traces from 2D to 4D data

2003

Abstract The detailed 3D geometry of normal fault planes is described and analysed using datasets from outcrop studies (2D), seismic surveys (3D) and analogue models (4D). Different geometric configurations of simple isolated normal faults are studied by reference to processes of normal fault propagation. When a normal fault propagates without interacting with other fault zones, the entire border of the principal plane displays characteristic connected secondary structures. These secondary structures cause bifurcations of the principal fault terminations. The along-strike terminations of the principal plane display typical bifurcation configurations (‘ear geometry‘). The orientation of the …

Reverse and normal drag along a fault

2005

An analysis of the theoretical displacement field around a single dip-slip fault at depth reveals that normal and reverse fault drag develop by perturbation flow induced by fault slip. We analytically model the heterogeneous part of the instantaneous displacement field of an isolated two-dimensional mode II fault in an infinite, homogeneous elastic body in response to fault slip. Material on both sides of the fault is displaced and ‘opposing circulation cells’ arise on opposite sides of the fault, with displacement magnitudes increasing towards the center of the fault. Both normal and reverse drag can develop at the fault center depending on the angle between the markers and the fault; norm…

Asymptotic regime in N random interacting species

2005

The asymptotic regime of a complex ecosystem with \emph{N}random interacting species and in the presence of an external multiplicative noise is analyzed. We find the role of the external noise on the long time probability distribution of the i-th density species, the extinction of species and the local field acting on the i-th population. We analyze in detail the transient dynamics of this field and the cavity field, which is the field acting on the $i^{th}$ species when this is absent. We find that the presence or the absence of some population give different asymptotic distributions of these fields.

Performance analysis of optical imaging systems based on the fractional fourier transform

1998

Some image quality parameters, such as the Strehl ratio and the optical transfer function, are analysed in the generalized phase-space, or x-p domain, of the fractional Fourier transform associated with a modified one-dimensional pupil function. Some experimental results together with computer simulations are performed which illustrate the tolerance to defocus of different apertures.

Further results on generalized centro-invertible matrices

2019

[EN] This paper deals with generalized centro-invertible matrices introduced by the authors in Lebtahi et al. (Appl. Math. Lett. 38, 106¿109, 2014). As a first result, we state the coordinability between the classes of involutory matrices, generalized centro-invertible matrices, and {K}-centrosymmetric matrices. Then, some characterizations of generalized centro-invertible matrices are obtained. A spectral study of generalized centro-invertible matrices is given. In addition, we prove that the sign of a generalized centro-invertible matrix is {K}-centrosymmetric and that the class of generalized centro-invertible matrices is closed under the matrix sign function. Finally, some algorithms ha…

Transient stability simulation of a fixed speed wind turbine by Matlab/Simulink

2007

This paper describes the dynamic behavior of a typical fixed speed wind turbine connected to the grid; the model is developed in the simulation tool Matlab/Simulink and created as a modular structure. The pitch control system is used for stabilization of the wind turbine at grid faults. In this way, voltage stability of the system with grid-connected wind turbines can be improved by using blade-angle control for a temporary reduction of the wind turbine power during a short-circuit fault in the grid. This paper shows a new variable control for maintaining of voltage stability, when a three-phase fault is applied close to the wind turbine and cleared by disconnecting the affected line. In th…

Development and validation of a nonlinear dynamic impact model for a notch impact

2015

Finite element simulations are being more and more applied when studying the crash-worthiness of vehicles during impact. This paper deals with setting up such a simulation and discusses several ways to simplify and verify a simulated crash. For this purpose, a notch impact-testing machine will be released from a certain angle and crash into a model constructed with three different wall thicknesses. The plastic and elastic deformation is measured in the front of the model and is then used for validation of the simulation. In the end, the simulation was found to be in good agreement with the real crash data.

Generalized centro-invertible matrices with applications

2014

Centro-invertible matrices are introduced by R.S. Wikramaratna in 2008. For an involutory matrix R, we define the generalized centro-invertible matrices with respect to R to be those matrices A such that RAR = A^−1. We apply these matrices to a problem in modular arithmetic. Specifically, algorithms for image blurring/deblurring are designed by means of generalized centro-invertible matrices. In addition, if R1 and R2 are n × n involutory matrices, then there is a simple bijection between the set of all centro-invertible matrices with respect to R1 and the set with respect to R2.

A state-space approach to mathematical modeling and parameters identification of vehicle frontal crash

2014

In this paper a state-space estimation procedure that relies on the time-domain analysis of input and output signals is used for mathematical modeling of vehicle frontal crash. The model is a double-spring–mass–damper system, whereby the front mass and real mass represent the chassis and the passenger compartment, respectively. It is observed that the dynamic crash of the model is closer to the dynamic crash from experimental when the mass of the chassis is greater than the mass of the passenger compartment. The dynamic crash depends on pole placement and the estimated parameters. It is noted that when the poles of the model are closer to zero, the dynamic crash of the model is far from the…
